How contractor licensing works in Ohio

No statewide GC license

Ohio does not license general remodeling contractors at the state level. Instead, cities — Dayton, Cincinnati, Columbus and others — require local registration, proof of insurance and sometimes testing. Always ask which municipality your contractor is registered with.

Trades are state-licensed

Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration and hydronics contractors must hold an OCILB state license. Any remodel touching those systems should involve licensed trades — verify at the Ohio Department of Commerce license lookup.

Consumer protections

Ohio's Home Construction Service Suppliers Act gives homeowners a 3-day right to cancel door-to-door contracts over $25 and requires written contracts for larger jobs. Deposits above 10–30% are a red flag.
